Gastroscopy and colonoscopy
Endoscopy in Auckland
Endoscopy allows direct assessment of the digestive tract and can often combine diagnosis and treatment in one procedure.
Gastroscopy examines the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. Colonoscopy examines the large bowel and the end of the small bowel when needed. Biopsies can be taken and many polyps can be removed during the same procedure.

Procedures
Gastroscopy, colonoscopy, biopsies and polyp removal.
Purpose
Diagnosis, surveillance, cancer prevention and treatment of selected findings.
Setting
Specialist-led endoscopy with careful preparation, sedation planning and follow-up.

Reasons to consider this service
These are common reasons patients are referred or request review. The final recommendation depends on your symptoms, history and previous results.
- Persistent reflux, indigestion, difficulty swallowing or upper abdominal symptoms.
- Rectal bleeding, change in bowel habit, positive FIT test or unexplained anaemia.
- Polyp surveillance or bowel cancer prevention.
- Inflammatory bowel disease assessment or monitoring.
- Abnormal imaging or symptoms that need direct visual assessment.
What to expect
A clear pathway from referral to follow-up
Referral review
The indication is checked so the correct procedure and preparation are arranged.
Preparation
Fasting or bowel preparation instructions are provided before the procedure.
Procedure
The endoscopy is performed with appropriate sedation and monitoring.
Results
Findings, biopsies and follow-up recommendations are explained after the procedure.
Specialist approach
Care that is structured and explained
Endoscopy should be technically careful, but also well explained. Patients should understand why the procedure is being done, what it can answer and what happens if a biopsy or polyp removal is needed.
Where a procedure is recommended, the reason, preparation, expected findings and follow-up plan should be understandable before you proceed.
